The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
