RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
