Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
