Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
